Psychiatric Services

What is Psychiatric Care?

Dr. Lisa Meaker

Nurse practitioners who specialize in mental health, often called Psychiatric–Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs), provide comprehensive behavioral health care by assessing, diagnosing, and treating a wide range of mental health conditions. Dr. Lisa Meaker, DNP, RN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, is trained in both medical and psychiatric care, and she can address the close connection between physical and mental health—managing medications, monitoring medical conditions that influence mental wellbeing, and providing therapy all in one place. This integrated approach improves continuity of care, reduces fragmented services, and helps patients feel more supported. Working in-person in clinic and online through telehealth, mental health NPs expand access to high-quality, holistic, and patient-centered services.

Dr. Lisa Meaker, DNP, RN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, is a dual-certified Psychiatric–Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner with seven years of experience delivering comprehensive medical and mental health care. She specializes in outpatient psychiatry, integrated medical–mental health services, and evidence-based medication management. Dr. Meaker is committed to providing holistic, patient-centered treatment and has extensive experience working with diverse populations across the lifespan. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice from Rush University and completed her Psychiatric–Mental Health Nurse Practitioner training at the University of Cincinnati. Through her dual training and focus on integrated care, Dr. Meaker strives to support each patient’s overall wellbeing by addressing both physical and mental health needs.

Trauma-Informed Care

Trauma-informed care is an approach to health and mental health services that recognizes the widespread impact of trauma and prioritizes physical, emotional, and psychological safety for individuals. This approach emphasizes trust, collaboration, empowerment, and cultural sensitivity to avoid re-traumatization and support healing. By understanding the effects of trauma, providers can create a safe, respectful environment that fosters resilience and recovery.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a specialized form of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) designed to help individuals manage intense emotions, improve relationships, and develop healthier coping strategies. DBT is built on the concept of dialectics, which means balancing two seemingly opposite ideas: acceptance and change. The therapy helps individuals accept their emotions and experiences while also working toward meaningful behavioral changes.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a widely used, evidence-based form of psychotherapy that focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors. It is based on the idea that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected, and by changing unhelpful thought patterns, we can improve emotional well-being and develop healthier behaviors.
